HOW IT ALL WORKS
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CUSTOM TAILOR SUITSHow much does it cost to get a suit tailored?Depending on where you live and what you need done, it could cost anywhere between $25 and $100 to tailor a suit. Doing things like shortening pants are cheap and easy, shortening sleeves is relatively easy though complicated if the jacket has buttons on the sleeves. Taking in the jacket around the sides will cost more. How do you tailor a suit? The first rule of suit alterations is that taking away or reducing the amount of fabric is doable, but you can’t make something bigger, at least not by much. Exactly how much depends on what allowances of extra material were under the seams or hems of the garments. Tailored pants and jackets that were originally expensive or well made, especially bespoke, will usually contain more allowances, future-proofing for the changing size of the wearer over time. Ready-to-wear or less expensive items usually have little or no extra material to let out as a means of keeping costs down. Therefore, you’ll have better chances for a successful alteration if your find is a bit too big rather than too small for you. Where can I buy a suit in Melbourne? In Melbourne, buying a made-to-measure or bespoke men’s suit is more than a fashion statement, it’s a way of life. The experts know as much, but do you? Are you merely grabbing the first suit you see and making do with those loose sleeves, or getting it tailor made? In other words, are you just wearing a suit, or owning one? And we don’t mean owning in the mere sense that you paid for it. You own it on that grand scale where the suit matches more than just your physical contours and says something about who you are. Don’t waste your time in generic department stores. Instead, go to one of the best tailors and bespoke Suit Shops in Melbourne. Do you tip your tailor? While good custom tailors usually do not expect or even accept a tip, showing appreciation in any form for the service they provide is never a misstep. If they do politely decline, remain respectful and move on. What is the most expensive suit brand? Most of these suits are necessarily reserved for the superclass: The world’s leading businessmen, celebrities, and world leaders who can afford to spend more money on a single suit than you can afford to spend on your car (or even your house). Stuart Hughes Diamond Edition – $892,500 These suits took more than 800 hours to design and stitch, and they are made of wool, cashmere, silk. Famed luxury goods designer Stuart Hughes teamed up with world-renowned tailor Richard Jewels to create this extravagant piece of art of which there are only three in the world. Why are tailored suits so expensive?Suits are typically made from wool or wool blends. Wool is a great material and superior to cotton in many ways (the advantage of cotton only being that it can be easily washed, which is why it is the classic material for (under-)garments that need to be washed regularly). While some wool can be itchy on the skin, it is generally the far superior material over cotton. It does not wrinkle as easily and unwrinkles mostly on its own or with the help of some steam. It is more breathable and keeps you colder in summer and warmer in winter. However breeding sheep and goats for wool is more costly than growing cotton. Just as a pound of meat is more expensive than a pound of veggies, a meter of wool fabric is typically more expensive than a meter of cotton fabric. Cheaper suits will sometimes try to substitute polyester for at least a part of the wool, but even high quality polyester fabrics are not cheap, at least not as cheap as very cheap cotton or acrylic. Are tailored suits worth it?It's worth it if you can get a price that's within your means. Don't spend more then you normally would on a suit, if its just for the custom suit. ... I wear a suit often anyway, so the custom vs not made no difference. It definitely enhances personal confidence, and the quality is noticeably better. |
Godwin Charli Suit Tailors Melbourne
0429 539 823
Our Story
Born in 1980 to Maltese immigrants, as a child, Godwin was raised next to sewing machines. A young boy found himself engaging his mot, her Evelyn regularly to modify or make almost everything he wore. However, the discovery in 2001 of a local tailoring workshop in Melbourne gave Godwin the fire to follow his true passion and nurture a natural-born or gift.
In his early 20s, the tailoring workshop that once supported Godwin's hobby had become his classroom. Under the careful guidance of master tailors and head atelier, these rare mentors taught Godwin a hands-on approach & patience, rarely seen in today's fast fashion industry. It was under these tables and machines that the Godwin Charli brand was born in 2007.
Specialising in tailored fashion for Men and Women, the 'Charli' in the brand (the female) is a nod to Godwin's parents Charles and Eve for their sartorial influence. Today, Godwin Charli draws on the same lessons in pursuit of tailoring perfection.
Working with an incredibly talented team both locally and internationally, Godwin creates world-classic garments that underline his customer's individuality and the brand's exacting quality, design & premium fabrication standards.
Made-to-measure Reimagined
Since 2007, Godwin Charli has been at the forefront of Men's and Women's tailoring in Australia, designing and creating the unique product from home base in MelbourneOurour core has always been to help our community look and feel their absolute best through local design world-class product and fabrication, inspiring style and personal fitting.
By advancing technology our partners' innovation, we are positioned to offer a Made-to-measure fashion experience like no other. We've reimagined the whole experience by making it sustainable and convenient for you.
How We Are Different
Collections are designed, and fabrics curated all year round by Godwin, accessible online or in person at our Melbourne showroom. Once your initial Fit Profile (see below) has been established, all chosen styles are then made-to-measure.
A 'Private Collection' service is also available in-person for a truly bespoke experience with Godwin. This involves accessing fabrics beyond the current ranges and making subtle design modifications.
The process is simple for new and existing clients.
Fit Profile
The process starts with an initial 15 minute Fit Profile assessment, and we make fit observations based on our existing patterns. By trying on actual 'fit garments,' we determine correct lengths, body contouring, unique posture and style preferences. It's a very efficient and enjoyable method with constant communication between ourselves and you. Our goal is to create your unique blueprint, your pattern, that can be applied to any future purchases.
Peter Jackson Suit Tailor Melbourne
(03) 9415 6281
About Us
Peter Jackson is an Australian garment maker constructing quality menswear with a passion for innovative design and a strong emphasis on revolutionising the menswear retail space. Our brand ly a testament to authentic crafts mans hand also represents our dedication to instilling confidence in men to embrace their fashion aspirations whilst making confident and lasting impressions.
Men's Suits
It is no longer just an office standard, suit explores a broader range of styles, patterns and palettes, making it a much more appealing option as an essential piece for the modern man's wardrobe. Modern styling options and the workforce's casualisation have driven up the popularity of casual suiting, seeing many men look too much bolder and brighter features outside of the norm.
See our collection of suits explore both classic and contemporary patterns, styled with a modern spin. While Checks remain the dominant focus for the man looking to bring a bolder look to the table, the rise of subversive textiles, such as subtle Stripes, Jacquards or texturally rich fabrics, begin to work their way into the mainstream. Windowpane and Prince of Wales Checks seek to dominate many men's wardrobe, with more intricate patterning and highlight colours are used to set their suit apart from the norm.
Seasonally focused palettes grow in density as the modern man becomes more aware and invested in his personal style.

Traditional Weddings
For a traditional, classic wedding, opt for a shawl-collared, one buttoned black tuxedo. This timeless design is flattering for various body shapes and is a perfect understated yet elegant option.
Beach Weddings
Beach weddings allow for fresh, lighter colours; beige, off-white, crisp blue. Go for a breathable, lightweight fabric like tropical weight wool, linen blend or cotton as a suit or separate outfit with more inherent texture, and less formality.
Winter Weddings
Peak lapels or a double-breasted closure adds a presence and visual sharpness that raises a suit's formality without being brash. It's an elegant option for any wedding, particularly well suited to formal, city events in the cooler months.

The Craft
Behind the Seams
Unique Patterns
At Carl Navè, we recognise that every client is unique, and we strive to celebrate that. After obtaining measurements, we ensure we modify our existing blocks and cut a specialised unique paper pattern, individual to every client. This ensures a perfect fit.
Hand Work
Our fine tailoring expertise is evident in every suit we make. Initially, machine stitched, every Carl Navè suit also has meticulously hand-sewn elements. Our lapels are hand pick-stitched to create an elegant soft roll, whilst our pockets feature silk pick-stitching, enhancing our pieces' finish.
It's All About The Canvas
Made with a woven horsehair canvas, our jacket interlinings are superior in made-to-measure suit construction. The floating canvas sits in-between the cloth and jacket lining and is based around the seams' edges, allowing the jacket to sit closer to the body and enhance durability. The use of canvases nullifies the need for adhesive fusing, which is commonly seen in cheaper alternatives. With a full canvas construction, you will never have to worry about detached fusing ever again.
Then We Talk Cloth
Sourced from the finest Italian and English mills, our cloth is made from the world's best-worsted wool and superfine weaves, ranging from the robust Super 110s to the luxurious Super 150s. We hand-select our cloth seasonally, providing you with a range of options befitting current trends that suit the Australian climate. Our close relationship with these trusted mills ensures that the suits at Carl Navè remain affordable and attainable.
The Surgeon's Cuffs
Working or functional buttonholes have always been the epitome of style and a true testament to bespoke tailoring. Extremely difficult to find in off-the-rack suits, at Carl Navè, you have the option of working buttonholes to elevate the style of your suit for a small fee.
Style Tip
Leave the last button undone so that your cufflink is slightly exposed. This functionality embodies class and elegance and is one of the most notable elements of fine tailoring.
The Shirt
Individualise your shirt at Carl Navè. Just like our individually tailored suits, we offer made-to-measure shirts starting from just $130. Select from our range of superfine cotton sourced from Italy, Switzerland, and the UK and twist it with your style.
The Cotton
Our cotton is sourced from Europe's top mills, which in turn is sourced from the finest Egyptian cotton available; it is our job here at Carl Navè to scour through the swatches and present you with a selection of exceptional choices, reflecting current trends whilst still having long-term functionality. Our range consists of an elegant assortment of poplins, oxfords, herringbones, twills, and more. Amongst these, we always aim to offer a range of seasonal and corporate colours.
The Collar
This two-piece construction with soft woven interlinings provides the integral trim to your shirt, ensuring it will last longer and look fresh every time you iron it. We add removable collar stays, to ensure crispness, however, ensure you remove them when laundering to avoid cracking. Choose from one of our six beautifully-crafted collar styles.
The Cuff
French, single-button, double-button, convertible, the list goes on. All of our cuffs are made with soft woven interlinings, much like our collars, ensuring they remain crisp and fresh every time you put your hand out to shake.
The Buttons
Like all good shirt-makers, we offer a selection of shell buttons to compliment your shirt's style. For instance, pearl buttons' mother offers strength, durability and elegance, available at no extra cost.

Steel and May Suit Tailors Melbourne
0408 408 557
Steel and May Bespoke Tailoring handcraft elegant men's suits, jackets and shirts for business, formal and casual wear, along with made-to-measure barrister (bar) jackets & trousers.
All our garments are handmade in Australia, and we have a reputation among our many Sydney and Melbourne clients for producing tailor-made suits and garments of an exceptional standard.
Steel and May believe the key to tailoring is cut, fit and balance. A well-cut made to measure suit should fit the body perfectly. An individual cut is devised for each client, depending on his measurements and his requirements, the pattern will be precisely adjusted to his and her figure and character.
Most of our corporate clients do not have the time or inclination to shop, to assist you; we offer a highly personalised service.
Steel and May do not operate out of a 'shop front', rather we visit customers by appointment at their home or office.
Our Cloth
Steel and May clients select from an extensive range of fine English, Italian and Scottish cloth. Many of the highest quality cloths are produced from Australian wool and are woven in Europe.
Fabric Weights
Typically the suit fabrics are graded for both weight (measured in ounces) and wool fineness (measured in 'Super' numbers). The heavier wool cloth is more durable and will tend to last longer than the lighter cloth, but may be uncomfortable in the Australian summer. We recommend fabric weights in the range of 9oz up to 12oz for everyday wear.
Wool Fineness
Typically, wool is graded from Super 80s up to Super 200s. New technology and breeding techniques are allowing us access to finer wools than ever before. However, these ultra-fine fabrics are not always ideal for everyday use as they are not as durable as the slightly coarser wools. Steel and May recommend fabrics from Super 100s up to Super 140s for everyday wear.
Fabric Patterns
Our range varies every season and includes classic patterns and timeless styles of Pinstripe, Chalk stripe, Herringbone, Prince of Wales, Birdseye, Houndstooth and plains. From here, colours are added to bring in different variations and fabric choices.
Bespoke Suits Sydney & Melbourne
Steel and May offer bespoke suits expertly crafted to your style & occasion. Our tailor-made suits and jackets are handmade in Australia from the finest quality fabrics and are tailored to fit the body perfectly for comfort and longevity.
Bespoke Suits
A bespoke suit can be whatever you desire. Clients choose from either single-breasted one, two or three-button or double-breasted jackets. Extra trousers are a popular choice to prolong the life of the suit.
Styling options for suits include handmade open buttonholes on jackets cuffs, adjustable button side tabs on trousers, different lapel widths, additional pockets such as phone pockets, hand stitching on the lapels, side or centre vents and additional ticket pockets on jackets. A full canvas jacket is also available to prolong the life of the suit.
We serve a diverse range of clients from the business, legal, sporting, racing and political arenas and also have extensive experience outfitting and styling wedding parties.

Henry Bucks Suit Tailors Melbourne
onlinefulfilment@henrybucks.com.au
History
Henry Buck was born on the 26th of November 1860 in Clerkenwell, London. He was the second child of Thomas, master electro-plater and later a corn factor. He moved to Yorkshire and was brought up in Danby. Henry learnt the soft goods trade at the age of thirteen and suffering from tuberculosis, migrated to New South Wales in 1887 finding a job as a grazier's farmhand at 'Manfred' owned by the Tailor family near Euston. His fiancée Laura Jane Rose joined him but was repelled by life on a sheep station and persuaded Henry to move to Melbourne. On the 25th of June 1887 at Armadale, the couple married with Presbyterian forms.
Henry worked as a bookbinder's assistant, losing his job in 1890 after having the ambition to ask for a pay rise, probably a shilling a week. He went into business with a friend and found to his dismay that he had been duped. Rather than take legal action against his friend, Henry took over the shirting fabric shop, the fabrics and equipment. With Laura as the bookkeeper and two machinists, he learned the trade of shirt making, opening a shop on the 25th of August 1890 in the fashionable Queen's Walk-off Swanston Street and Collins Street now known as Henry Buck Pty Ltd.
By the turn of the century, Henry had built a big factory on Melbourne's outskirts to manufacture shirts, pyjamas, and ties. He also diversified into warehousing and wholesaling and founded Wallace, Buck and Goodes Pty Ltd, the London Tie Co Pty Ltd, Beaucaire Knitting Mills Pty Ltd and Eyelets Pty Ltd.
Henry was a respected figure in Melbourne where he belonged to the Commercial Travellers' Association, the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria, the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Master Drapers' Association of Victoria, and London, where he was a member of the Portland Club. He was an authority on bridge and solo and belonged to the Melbourne Philharmonic Society.
King George V appointed Henry Buck an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1920 for services to the community and business. As well as managing a business involved in retail, manufacturing and wholesaling, Henry had become famous for administering to thousands of returned troops, ferrying them around and providing food and shelter throughout the 1914-1918 war.
Henry Buck died on the 7th of May 1933 in Marylebone, London and was survived by his wife and daughter.
The company moved in 1963 to the new Colonial Mutual Building, Collins Street, where the old store's plush atmosphere was re-created and remained at 320 Collins Street, Melbourne. There are now three stores in Melbourne, one in Sydney and thriving online shopping business.
The company has strengthened its' position in the market place over the years through expansion and consolidation, entrepreneurial initiatives and focusing on its' 35-65 age group of affluent, corporate and professional, smartly dressed clients. Henry Bucks is one of the world's great menswear stores and perhaps one of the last of the great menswear retail specialists to remain in family hands to this day.

We have various types of appointments to ensure that we are correctly catering to your needs.
Fitting
We'll go over fabrics and design options in a Fitting appointment before we measure you up for your made-to-measure garment. If you have any reference images for the look you are trying to achieve, bring them along with you to your fitting. We will help guide you as to which fabric, fit, and aesthetic are appropriate for your body type and preference. Our stylists will guide you to the best selections to suit your needs. You will try on sample garments to ensure your suit has your desired look and feel during your fitting.
Try-On
In your Try-on appointment (about 6 weeks after your fitting) we'll be reviewing the fit and finish of your made-to-measure garment. Almost all of our customers will be able to take their garments home with them after this fitting if you're not local to one of our stores than we can happily ship your garment directly to you and skip this step.
Wedding Consultation
In a Wedding Consultation, your stylist will review your wedding information to help you achieve the desired look. After discussing the perfect design, we will send a quote with all of the costs attributed to making your wedding suits. Along with the price, we'll also give you a break down on the timing. We'll provide you with the dates you'll need to be measured, make your purchase, and have your final fitting. There are no additional costs for wedding suits, but we do ask for more time to ensure a seamless process. We ask you to come in for consultation no later than 12 weeks before your wedding date. All quotes are applicable for 90 days.

Tips for Getting the Best Suit Alterations
Whether it's your first time having clothes altered or you're a seasoned suit shaper, there are some simple insider tips you can learn that will visit the tailor smoother and more successful.
Know your tailor
Knowing your tailor comes through research and recommendations. Learn about their experience, reliability, and quality of service. You can get a good understanding of this by looking at their site and reading reviews.
At Looksmart Alterations, we take pride in giving you fast, courteous, inexpensive tailoring – with a level of quality that's gained the respect of leading fashion retailers, the corporate world and close to a million satisfied customers. We focus on ensuring the perfect fit through finely detailed custom tailoring and a trained understanding of fashion and styling.
Give a courtesy call.
Most tailors welcome you to drop in for a quick fitting. In fact, at Looksmart Alterations, you can have your jeans or pants shortened within an hour, or it's free.
That said, it's always appreciated to receive a courtesy call at least 30 minutes before your arrival. Pinning and tucking different garments can vary in terms of how long it takes. For example, a three-piece suit will take much longer than a pair of pants. Quality tailoring takes time, and to save yours, and we recommend booking ahead.
Be Prepared
Whatever it is that you're having altered – be it a suit jacket, tux pants, or a dress shirt – bring all the basic items you're planning to wear with it to the fitting. This is especially relevant when hemming garments, as length depends on the type of shoes you will wear with it.
For repairs, bring along the repair kit the manufacturer may have supplied when purchasing your garment. Men's suits usually come with an extra swatch of material, a button, and some thread supplied in the back pocket of the pants or the jacket's interior pocket. If not, most garments with buttons will have a spare sewn on the inside near the care label.
Know the language
It's safe to say that the fashion industry employs a vernacular of their own – similar to how doctors have their medical jargon. Knowing some of the terms will help you accurately describe what you're after from your alteration.
Here are 4 sewing terms to get you started.
Darts
A fold of fabric sewn into the garment to create shape, commonly to fit the waist and bust.
Vents
Vents refer to the slit located near the tail of the jacket.
Inseam
The seam along the inside of the pant leg from the bottom crotch to the lower ankle.
Taper
Taper is the narrowing of pants towards the ankle; rather than a straight or bell-shaped end.
Know what's in style
Following the current suiting trends will help determine whether or not you're asking for something appropriate.
4 current suit trends include:
- Allowing shirt cuffs between ¼" and ½" in length showing.
- Pant breaks should be kept to little or no break, so the pant flows seamlessly into the shoe with just a little extra fabric draping over.
- Jackets should be kept slim-fitting, with only the slightest hint of tugging at the front when buttoned.
- Pants should be slim and flattering, with a slight taper to your ankles.
If you're unsure, we work across various corporate accounts at Looksmart Alterations and go out of our way to stay up to date with styles. With our knowledge and experience, we are confident we can give you the perfect look and fit.
