Hospitality Humour – How to win friends & influence people

By Michael Lee – 03-May-2014

We recently had a job vacancy here at Brighton Savoy Hotel advertised on seek.com. After receiving over 300 applicants for the role, and selecting the successful candidate, I sent an email to the unsuccessful applicants via the Seek.com.au website.
The following is a transcript of an email conversation I had with one of the unsuccessful candidates. (names changed)

The original email sent to all applicants

Hi XXXXXXXX,

Thank you for taking the time to apply for the role advertised at Brighton Savoy.
The position has been filled and your application was unsuccessful.

Wishing you all the best

Hi Michael,

I didn’t know someone could become a managing director and not know how to spell the word. Wishing you well, too.

Hi XXXXX

Thank you for your kind feedback in relation to my spelling.

I suggest considering reading the following book http://www.amazon.com/How-Win-Friends-Influence-People/dp/0671027034

I personally found the book very helpful on my Journey to being a “managing director”.

Warm regards

Michael Lee
Managing Director

PS: Here is a response from another candidate who received the same email.
Thank you for your response Michael. In this day and age with so many applicants for so few positions, it’s nice to meet an employer with the courtesy to reply to my application. I appreciate that. Please could you keep my CV on file, should another suitable position become available in the future?

Haha,
I’m glad you found wisdom in a book!
I can direct you to a few more, if you’d like. It appears as though you have the time for them. Most “managing directors” I know don’t have the time to tell me about books they’ve read (and neither do they reply to job applicants because specialist hr people do that)!

Thank you for your questions and concerns, I’m doing just fine, and feeling better already knowing my work isn’t at Brighton Savoy! Have a nice day!

This is disappointing, as I really felt a strong desire to take you under my wing and mentor you; alas it appears this is not to be.

My very best wishes for your future endeavours
