By far, the most popular function we host is our wedding receptions. Being nestled away on the beachfront, you and your guests will have complete privacy to relax and enjoy yourselves.

Our venue is perfect for smaller, more intimate weddings. We host up to 120 guests, depending on what package you decide upon. Cocktail-style, finger-food wedding receptions can fit up to 120 guests, whereas a fully-seated wedding reception can fit up to 70 guests. Regarding costs, we are one of the more affordable wedding reception venues around Melbourne. We are a big believer in the value and complete transparency – we don't charge any premium for weddings, and there are no hidden costs whatsoever.

Seaside home and Beachfront Apartment accommodation are walking distance from each other, and Santa Monica is right opposite Carnegie station.

Seaside Home Bed & Breakfast and Beachfront Apartment offer accommodation in a beachside suburb of Elwood. Santa Monica, 2 Bedroom Apartment, is in the heart of Carnegie. Guests can enjoy a relaxed and comfortable 'home away from home experience in our boutique-style accommodation – just metres from the beach, stations, yachts, golf course, shops, restaurants and bars.

Elwood's art deco architecture hints at its wild, quirky past as a cabaret nightspot during the 1970s. Today, the more gentrified suburb is one of Melbourne's most sought-after locations. Nunnery History The Nunnery was built in 1888 for prominent English Physician Dr Thomas Hewlett. His son Herbert Hewlett was one of the pioneers of x-ray technology in Australia, and x-ray equipment was installed here in 1902. In 1944 the archdiocese purchased the building for the Daughters of Charity for 5,732 pounds. The Daughters of Charity renamed it St Vincent's Hall and went about their pastoral/parish work in Fitzroy and Collingwood. 

A chapel and a confessional were built in a large room on the ground floor for contemplation and prayer, and later small services were held. In 1960 the sisters opened St Mary's House of Welcome, located on Brunswick st. The Sisters also took young women aged 16-19 as boarders who came from the country to work or study in the city. Rumour has it that the Nuns were strict on their young borders, curfews and attire checks were common. Gentleman callers were only allowed as far as the front lounge. 

In 1979, the house accommodated young women from Vietnam and Cambodia. In 1989 the Refugee accommodation was discontinued, and the Nuns moved to North Carlton to continue their work. In 1990 the Townshend family purchased the building from the Daughters of Charity and established one of Melbourne's first backpacker hostels for young international travellers and called it "The Nunnery". Today The Nunnery is regarded as one of the best backpackers in Australia and has expanded over the years to cater to a greater range of travellers. Now the new "Nun's" have backpacker's accommodation through to B&B style accommodation, and the curfew is long, long gone.

Having worked in the advertising and marketing field for over 2 decades, our Director Nash Tetlow has sat through her fair share of research groups, offsite strategy days and conferences.

Tired of what was being offered – cold, uninspiring and soulless rooms that hindered creative thinking and natural interaction, Nash realised there was a need for a space that was beautifully authentic, genuine and that encouraged openness. Taking the brave leap out of the security of the corporate world, Nash embarked on an incredible journey. 

After 12 months of searching, she came across the space that is now called Canvas House. Not afraid of hard work, Nash was on the tools alongside the builders, ensuring that no stone was left unturned and that her vision for the space came to life. Six months later, Canvas House was launched and has quickly become one of Melbourne's hottest venues.

It's all in a name

We are often asked how the name Canvas House was born. People often mistakenly think our name is a subtle reference to the blank canvas nature of the space and its ability to be easily and quickly transformed. In fact, when looking for a name, Nash wanted it to reference the history of South Melbourne. 

The area, now known as South Melbourne, was first settled by the Europeans in the 1840s and became known as Emerald Hill. During the Victorian Gold Rush of 1851, a tent city known as Canvas Town was established, and the area soon became home to tens of thousands of migrants from around the world.

When working on the design of the space, Nash knew that she needed to incorporate the house into the name, and upon learning the history of the area, she knew immediately that Canvas House was not only a way to pay homage but to celebrate the purpose of the space - bringing people together.

Blacksail Bar

This stylish bar is the ideal place for birthday parties and private cocktail functions. The room features 3 inbuilt plasmas and a large central bar with a fluorescent-lit bar top. Floor to ceiling glass bi-fold doors provide panoramic views of the harbour and skyline and can be opened to incorporate the large undercover balcony and create an amazing el fresco experience.

For the larger functions, the BlackSail Bar can also incorporate the Victoria Room creating a more relaxed environment that is ideal for those that don't want to be in the centre of all the action or just simply want to chill out for a few minutes. The Baths Upstairs is Melbourne's premier wedding and events venue with breathtaking panoramic views of Port Phillip Bay, the city skyline and sunset backdrops. The versatile Upstairs venue can be customised to suit smaller weddings from 10 guests up to larger weddings of 200.

If you choose to have your ceremony at The Baths, our 'Basic Ceremony SetUp' is $750. Ceremonies are hosted on our main balcony or ceremony room, depending on your number of guests. Wet weather plans will be arranged with

the events manager depending on your wedding setup. Location may vary.

Getting married in the months of May-August?

Our floor to ceiling windows provides the perfect platform to watch the moody winter weather roll in across the bay while your guests are warm and cosy inside with our log-wood fireplace. Heaters on the deck allow guests to enjoy the outdoor decking. 

You won't have to worry about the diminishing daylight either. Subject to availability, you can start your ceremony at 2 pm at no additional cost to make the most of the day and capture those beautiful sunsets. If this option is right for you, please speak to our events team, who can advise availability on your requested dates.

Cocktail Events

Our cocktail events offer a more fluid event style with a greater variety of food choices. Plentiful roaming canapés are served in waves throughout the evening at your desired time to your guests. Our spacious venue offers a variety of areas where your guests can mingle, including our lounge, balcony or main room.
