Mezzanine Lounge

Our mezzanine lounge is a cosy, intimate space with an atmosphere of old-school glamour and can comfortably hold up to 55 guests. It is located on a private level upstairs and has its own amenities on this floor.

Large chesterfield lounges and smoked glass tables, a beautiful hand-crafted, timber bar and tea, light candles throughout to add to the ambience. It is a special and unique space, sure to impress your guests.

The Underground Experiment

Our venue's biggest surprise is our large underground bar- catering to groups of up to 170 people with the added bonus of a 3 am weekend license. This is a fully catered space separate from the commotion of the streets for those looking for something completely private.

Dine With Spectacular Views Of Brighton Beach      

Established as the Royal Terminus Hotel in the 1840s, Brighton Beach Hotel remains one of Brighton's oldest landmarks. Once formerly well known as Milano's Tavern, Brighton Beach Hotel is the second hotel south of the Yarra River and originally built of local red ironstone. The hotel was once so remote that it was bailed up by bushrangers.

Very quickly the establishment of five gracious sitting rooms, seven bedrooms for 30 shillings a week and stables became a destination resort. Also for hire were the prototype bathing boxes, these were wheeled into the bay for a healthy sea dip. Today, the altered but recognisable "Georgian" facade has witnessed it all and is classified by the National Trust.

The ground level offers a bistro, alfresco courtyard and sports bar, while the second level also has function rooms, as well as a terrace with fantastic views of the bay.

Suppose you are searching for a unique function space on Chapel Street for your next event look no further. Created as a nod to the speakeasy culture of illegal drinking dens set-up during America's prohibition era of the 1920s and early 1930s, Speakeasy (completely legal) is a cafe, bar, restaurant with a sumptuous function room. It is located in the heart of South Yarra, on busy Chapel Street and just around the corner from the Prahran market.

Sit-down Lunch Event at Speakeasy

The small entrance – shopfront on Chapel Street, only three meters wide – is a deceptive one. As you move through space, designed by Eon Architects, a smart dining room and large wooden outer-terrace reveal themselves.

Connoisseur might sneak through the back laneway – off Commercial road—nothing like a laneway covered in graffiti leading to a secret bar to impress your entourage.

Our restored private dining room is on the second floor and is equipped with a private bar, amenities and private outdoor balcony.

It boasts original fittings from when the building was first erected in 1885 with high timber ceilings, baltic pine floors, four working fireplaces and period windows overlooking Chapel Street.

A minimum spend applies for the private dining room, made up of food and drink purchases.

The Courtyard: Our courtyard area is a public area of the restaurant. You can book an area of the courtyard for up to 80 guests, however, note that the courtyard remains open to the public. Music played in the courtyard is controlled by Speakeasy staff (playlist and level). It is a perfect space for casual birthday drinks with a group of friends!

Steps to Planning an Engagement Party

Decide who's hosting.

Whether it's you and your fiancé, your siblings, your BFF, or your partner's family, just about anyone can plan (and pay for) the celebration. You can call in the help of a professional if you're going all-out for your engagement party (some wedding planners even include it in their overall package).

Pick a date.

The best time is within the first few months of engagement. The excitement is still fresh, and any potential wedding planning stress has yet to kick in!

Create the guest list.

The best bet is to keep the engagement party more intimate and invite only those who will be at the wedding as well. If someone is throwing the party on your behalf, consult with them before ordering invitations. 

Choose a venue.

Engagement parties can be as big or small and as formal or informal as you'd like, giving you lots of flexibility when it comes to the venue. A party at your parents' home or in your aunt's backyard is a lovely low-key option, while the private dining room at your favourite restaurant is a great choice for something a little more intimate and formal.

Register for gifts.

"Try to finish your registry before the party," Lowenthal advises. "Many people are going to want to buy you a gift once they know you are engaged."

Focus on low- to middle-priced items for now (remember, you'll get wedding gifts later!). If you'd prefer not to get gifts, you can always put a line on the invitation kindly requesting that guests not bring gifts.

Send invitations.

"Send out invitations at least a month before and make sure to have an RSVP date on there as well," Lowenthal says. The type of invitations you choose will depend on the type of event you're throwing. The good news is, there's no need to match these invitations to the rest of your wedding stationery, so pick something festive that you love!

Plan the menu.

If you're serving booze in any form, you'll want some food available also. For an evening of cocktails, opt for passed appetisers or a display of cheeses, meats, and crudités. Gathering in the backyard? Your favorite cookout fare is a must. If the evening will be more formal, a plated meal is a nice touch but doesn't have to be a drawn-out five-course meal with wine pairings.

Set the scene.

As with just about every other engagement party detail, the theme and decor can be as simple or as complicated as you'd like. The focus is on celebrating, so do whatever will help you enhance that vibe. Candlelight is always a good choice, and a few small floral arrangements will perk up space. 

Decide what to wear.

Choose attire that's appropriate for the party's setting. You don't have to go all-white if you don't want to (we love a white-based floral pattern or a soft pastel!), and, of course, you can wear another colour if you'd prefer. Your partner's attire should complement yours as well as fit the type of celebration.
