An hour after eating, I check to see the impact. Before exercise, during exercise, after exercise—I’m constantly informed. This frequency would be impossible with finger pricks, but with the Libre2Plus, it takes 2 seconds.

The alarms provide peace of mind. I set my low alarm at 3.9 mmol/L and my high alarm at 10.0 mmol/L. Knowing the sensor will alert me if I’m trending toward dangerous territory lets me sleep better and focus on work without constant worry. I’ve had a few nighttime low alarms that potentially prevented serious hypoglycaemic episodes.

The sensor is surprisingly comfortable. After the first day, I honestly forget it’s there most of the time. It’s small, discreet, and doesn’t interfere with clothing. The Challenges: What the Libre2Plus Isn’t Perfect At

To give you a complete and honest review, there are some limitations and frustrations I’ve experienced:

The warm-up period is annoying. That one-hour wait after applying a new sensor feels eternal when you’re used to having continuous data. I’ve learned to time sensor changes for periods when I don’t need immediate data, but it’s still an inconvenience.

Compression lows are real. If I sleep on my sensor arm, I sometimes get false low readings. The sensor measures glucose in interstitial fluid, and pressure on the sensor can temporarily affect readings. I’ve learned to recognise these false alarms, but early on, they caused unnecessary panic and interrupted sleep.

The lag time takes getting used to. The sensor reads interstitial fluid glucose, which lags behind blood glucose by about 5-15 minutes. During rapid changes (like after eating or during exercise), the sensor reading might not match a finger prick. This bothered me initially, but I’ve learned that the trend arrows are more important than the exact number at any given moment.

Sensor accuracy can vary. Most of my sensors are highly accurate, but I’ve had a few that seemed consistently 1.1-1.7 mmol/L off. I still keep my finger prick meter and use it occasionally to verify suspicious readings, especially when I feel symptoms that don’t match the sensor data.

Adhesive challenges in summer. During hot weather or intense workouts, the adhesive can struggle. I’ve had two sensors come off early (around day 10-11) when I was swimming and sweating a lot. Using overlay patches solved this problem, but it’s an extra step and expense.

The sensor scan requirement can be awkward. Unlike some CGMs that continuously transmit to your phone, the Libre2Plus requires you to scan it with your phone (holding it within an inch or two of the sensor) to see your current reading. Most of the time this is fine, but in meetings or social situations, it can feel conspicuous. The optional alarms work without scanning, which helps, but I wish it had automatic continuous transmission.

Let’s talk about the bottom line—my A1C dropped from 9.2 to 6.1 in six months. But the impact goes far beyond that single number:

My average daily glucose dropped from 11.7 mmol/L to 7.1 mmol/L. This means I’m spending dramatically less time with dangerous glucose levels coursing through my veins.

My time in range increased from about 30% to 85%. Time in range (3.9-10.0 mmol/L) is considered one of the most important metrics for diabetes management, and the Libre2Plus helped me optimise it.

My glucose variability decreased significantly. Instead of wild swings from 4.4 to 15.5 mmol/L, my glucose now typically stays between 5.6-8.9 mmol/L throughout the day. This stability means I feel better physically and have more consistent energy.

I lost 8 kilograms without “dieting.” By making smarter food choices based on actual glucose response rather than general dietary guidelines, the weight came off naturally. I wasn’t eating less—I was eating smarter.

Type 2 diabetics on insulin or multiple medications. If you’re taking insulin or your regimen is complex, you need continuous data to understand how your medications are working and when you might need adjustments.

Anyone experiencing frequent hypos or hypers. If you’re having unexpected highs or lows, the Libre2Plus will help you identify patterns and triggers you’re missing with spot checks.

People who want to understand how food affects them personally. Everyone’s glucose response to food is different. The CGM lets you discover which foods work for your unique metabolism.

Athletes and active individuals with diabetes. Understanding how exercise affects your glucose—both during and after—is crucial for safe and effective workouts.

The Libre2Plus might not be necessary for someone with well-controlled diabetes (A1C consistently under 6.5) who’s managing fine with occasional testing, though even they might benefit from the insights and peace of mind.

Tips for New Libre2Plus Users

If you’re about to start using the Libre2Plus, here’s what I wish someone had told me:

Give yourself a week to just observe. Don’t make drastic changes immediately. Spend the first week simply watching your patterns and learning what affects your glucose. The data can be overwhelming at first.

Don’t panic over every spike. Your glucose will fluctuate—that’s normal. Focus on patterns, not individual readings. A spike to 10.0 mmol/L after a meal isn’t the end of the world; consistently hitting 13.9 mmol/L after meals is a pattern to address.

Use the trend arrows. The directional arrows (rapidly rising, slowly rising, steady, slowly falling, rapidly falling) are sometimes more valuable than the number itself. They tell you where you’re headed, not just where you are.

Experiment deliberately. Try different foods, exercise timing, and strategies one at a time so you can clearly see what works. The Libre2Plus turns diabetes management into a science experiment where you’re both the scientist and the subject.

Join online communities. Facebook groups and Reddit communities for CGM users are invaluable for tips, troubleshooting, and support. I learned about overlay patches, application techniques, and many insights from other users.

Keep your finger prick meter handy. You’ll need it occasionally to verify sensor readings, especially in the first few weeks as you learn to trust the device.

Work with your healthcare team. Share your CGM data with your doctor. Many endocrinologists use LibreView, which lets them access your data remotely and provide better guidance between appointments.
