Can Gold Coast cafés compete with Melbourne?
For my taste, absolutely. Melbourne deserves its reputation for serious coffee and inventive café cooking, but that does not mean every memorable brunch has to happen there.
The attraction of the Gold Coast is the combination. A bakery can be a reason to plan your morning. A café near the beach can turn breakfast into a leisurely outing. A neighbourhood espresso bar can give you a reason to explore beyond the main holiday strip.
I also look at brunch through a hospitality lens. A beautiful plate is only part of the experience. The welcome, the flow of service, the comfort of the table and whether the menu suits the occasion all matter. Those are the qualities I would encourage you to judge when trying the cafés below.
My view that some Gold Coast cafés are as good as, or better than, Melbourne cafés is a personal one. The fun is making your own comparison. Our guide to Melbourne brunch spots gives you another starting point.
My top three Gold Coast brunch cafés
1. Bam Bam Bakehouse, Mermaid Beach
Address: 2519 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach
Best for: Combining a proper brunch with something from the pastry cabinet.
Bam Bam takes first place on my list. Its mix of bakery craftsmanship and all-day brunch makes it an appealing starting point for anyone who treats breakfast as a highlight of a holiday.
The bakery’s range includes croissants, twice-baked almond croissants, cruffins, éclairs and tarts, with Single O coffee alongside the brunch offering. That gives you two ways to approach a visit: settle in for a meal, or keep things simple with coffee and a pastry.
For Melbourne café lovers, the baking is the obvious point of interest. Leave room for it when deciding what to order. Bam Bam sits on the Gold Coast Highway, so plan it as a café destination rather than expecting an oceanfront table.

2. Hot Shott, Main Beach
Address: 3/17 Tedder Avenue, Main Beach
Best for: A generous brunch and time exploring Main Beach.
Hot Shott is my second pick, and a reason to head north from Broadbeach. Its Tedder Avenue location puts it in Main Beach’s dining neighbourhood.
The published menu gives familiar breakfast ideas some personality. Examples include chilli scrambled eggs with chorizo and the “Crump-it Up” combination of sourdough crumpets, poached eggs, avocado and other savoury toppings. There are substantial breakfast plates as well as lunch choices.
This is the option I would put in front of someone who wants a full café meal. Its all-day approach is also useful when one person feels like breakfast and another is ready for lunch. The venue’s contact page specifies walk-ins for ordinary café visits.

3. Sunnyboy Espresso, Mermaid Beach
Address: 168 Hedges Avenue, Mermaid Beach
Best for: Brunch close to the beach with a seasonal menu.
Sunnyboy Espresso completes my top three. Being based in Broadbeach makes Mermaid Beach an obvious area to explore, and Sunnyboy brings the beachside setting into the brunch experience.
It comes from the team behind Elk Espresso and occupies a spot on Hedges Avenue, just steps from the ocean. The café describes its food offering as seasonal, so it is worth checking what is available instead of arriving with your heart set on a dish from an older photograph.
For me, this is an easy fit for a morning built around café time and a coastal walk. It also offers a boozy brunch option for those planning a celebration. Sunnyboy operates on a walk-in basis.

These additional recommendations broaden the choice for different neighbourhoods, appetites and occasions. The descriptions draw on current venue information and published menus.
4. Elk Espresso, Broadbeach
Location: The Oasis, Old Burleigh Road side, opposite Kurrawa Park, Broadbeach
Best for: A central Broadbeach brunch near the foreshore.
Elk is a natural addition for readers staying in Broadbeach. Its position on the beachfront side of The Oasis makes it easy to combine a café visit with time around Kurrawa Park and the beach.
Specialty coffee and a daytime dining offering are central to the venue, with boozy brunch also available. There is a useful connection to my third pick: Sunnyboy comes from the same team.
Elk suits a morning when you want to stay around central Broadbeach. It is walk-in only, so allow some flexibility. Its website lists a kitchen closing time earlier than the café’s closing time, a detail worth checking if you plan a late brunch.
5. No Name Lane, Broadbeach
Location: Oracle Boulevard precinct, Oracle South, Broadbeach
Best for: A Melbourne-style café experience in the centre of Broadbeach.
No Name Lane is particularly relevant to the Melbourne comparison. The Oracle Boulevard precinct describes it as a Melbourne-style café, with specialty coffee, meals made using local produce and an all-day breakfast offering.
The practical attraction is its combination of full table service and a separate takeaway area. You can plan a sit-down brunch or make it a coffee stop while exploring Broadbeach.
If your idea of a good café starts with the coffee and grows into a meal, this is a sensible addition to the shortlist. Head to the Broadbeach café for this listing, and check the venue’s current location information when planning your visit.
Visit No Name Lane or see its Oracle Boulevard venue listing.

6. Paddock Bakery, Burleigh Heads
Address: 20 Hibiscus Haven, Burleigh Heads
Best for: Wood-fired sourdough, bakery treats and a garden setting.
Paddock offers a different kind of café outing. Its restored Queenslander and collection of garden, cottage, loft and barn seating give the venue more character than a standard shopfront breakfast stop.
The wood-fired oven and sourdough are central to its story. Brunch, pastries and bakery purchases make it a strong option for readers whose Melbourne café routine includes taking something home for later.
The setting is part of the reason to choose it, so allow time to sit down if that is the experience you want. Paddock states that it is walk-in only, and its grill closes before the bakery’s full trading day ends.
7. Tarte Bakery & Café, Burleigh Heads
Address: 1748 Gold Coast Highway, by West Street, Burleigh Heads
Best for: A bakery-focused stop during a Burleigh morning.
Tarte’s Burleigh café combines breakfast and lunch with a substantial baking identity. Its official pastry selection includes kouign-amann and strawberry muffin tops, giving you a reason to look beyond the usual breakfast order.
The flagship sits by leafy West Street, just outside the main James Street activity. That makes it a useful starting point for a morning around Burleigh rather than a café stop that requires a separate day’s itinerary.
This listing is for the Burleigh Heads bakery, which is walk-in only. Tarte also operates a Beach House at Currumbin, with different settings and booking arrangements, so check the branch before making plans.
8. Custard Canteen, Tallebudgera Creek
Address: 1525 Gold Coast Highway, Palm Beach, near Tallebudgera Creek
Best for: Making brunch part of a creekside outing.
Custard Canteen is a good option when the day’s plans extend beyond the table. It is close to Tallebudgera Creek and offers pastries made on site, coffee and all-day brunch.
That combination gives you flexibility. You can make a meal the focus or pick up coffee and something from the bakery before spending time nearby. Online takeaway ordering is available through the venue.
It is worth being precise about the location: this is the Palm Beach side of the Tallebudgera Creek area. Use the café’s address when navigating. Its appeal for this guide is the way food and a coastal outing can fit together in one morning.
9. The Milkman’s Daughter, Mermaid Beach
Address: 2/43 Alfred Street, Mermaid Beach
Best for: A brunch menu with plenty of vegetarian and vegan choices.
The Milkman’s Daughter deserves a look when you want vegetable-led options to be a meaningful part of the menu. Its published breakfast choices include shakshuka, lemon ricotta pancakes and a farmer’s breakfast with a tofu-scramble option.
One useful detail from checking the current menu: it also lists ham and smoked salmon. It is therefore better described as offering substantial vegetarian and vegan choices than as an exclusively vegetarian café.
For a group with different preferences, that breadth may be helpful. Check the individual dish and any required substitutions when ordering. The published morning meal service finishes at 1 pm, so plan this one earlier in the day.
10. Little Mermaid, Mermaid Beach
Address: Shop 1A, 2557 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach
Best for: Middle Eastern and Mediterranean brunch flavours, including family outings.
Little Mermaid adds a different flavour direction to the list. Its current website highlights dishes such as shakshuka, Turkish eggs, lahmajun and Persian sandwiches alongside coffee and café staples.
That makes it worth considering when several days of familiar breakfast dishes have you looking for a change. Choose it for the menu’s Middle Eastern and Mediterranean influence, then explore what is available on the day.
There is also a practical family angle: the café advertises a gated children’s play area with toys. It offers reservations and welcomes dogs, making it a useful venue to investigate when your brunch plans involve more than two adults and a table for coffee.
11. Stable, Tugun
Address: Cornerstone Stores, 570 Gold Coast Highway, Tugun
Best for: Seasonal brunch, specialty coffee and a southern Gold Coast outing.
Stable, also known as Stable Coffee & Kitchen, brings a direct Melbourne coffee connection to this guide. The Cornerstone Stores website lists ST. ALi coffee from South Melbourne alongside a seasonal breakfast and lunch offering.
The café sits in the precinct’s brick courtyard, with shops nearby and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary opposite. Published menu examples include a breakfast roll, chilli scramble and mushrooms on toast, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options also available.
This is a good candidate for readers who enjoy making a café part of a broader neighbourhood visit. If you are travelling south from Broadbeach, combine it with other plans around Tugun or Currumbin.
Visit Stable or read the Cornerstone Stores café profile.
12. Daark Espresso, Chirn Park
Address: Shop 2, 41 Musgrave Avenue, Chirn Park
Best for: Specialty coffee and a neighbourhood brunch north of Broadbeach.
Daark gives you a reason to look beyond the beachfront suburbs. Its Chirn Park setting, wraparound deck and table service suit a café outing where the food and coffee are the main event.
The venue lists Supreme Roasters coffee and menu examples including sweet potato and feta fritters and Turkish eggs. Those choices make it relevant to readers who favour a savoury breakfast with some character.
It is also worth investigating for a small group: Daark advertises advance bookings for groups of four to ten, with exclusions including public holidays and Gold Coast Marathon weekend. Check its current policy before organising a catch-up.
13. The Winey Cow, Main Beach
Address: 5–11 Woodroffe Avenue, Main Beach
Best for: All-day brunch with a genuine Victorian connection.
The Winey Cow is an especially neat fit for the Melbourne-versus-Gold-Coast conversation. The business began on the Mornington Peninsula in 2014 and opened its Main Beach venue in 2023.
The Gold Coast menu includes generous dishes such as chicken and waffles and a substantial big breakfast. There are also brunch drinks and a booking option, making it worth considering for a planned gathering.
Its Victorian roots give Melbourne visitors a point of familiarity, while the Main Beach location offers a different setting for the experience. Choose it when a leisurely, substantial brunch is what you have in mind, and check the Main Beach menu specifically.
14. Alkemist, Broadbeach Waters
Address: 1/1 Sunshine Boulevard, Broadbeach Waters
Best for: A neighbourhood café option beyond the beachfront strip.
Alkemist is a useful addition for anyone spending longer in Broadbeach and wanting to widen their café circuit. Its Sunshine Boulevard location takes you into Broadbeach Waters.
The café’s own social profile highlights breakfast classics with a creative twist. Its Australian Good Food Guide listing describes a leafy setting and a menu spanning breakfast bowls and more substantial daytime dishes.
Consider it when you want a nearby alternative to the central Broadbeach café precinct. Use its official social account to check recent dishes and trading updates before making a special trip.
Visit Alkemist’s official Instagram or see its Australian Good Food Guide listing.
15. Dune Café, Palm Beach
Address: Palm Beach Parklands, 945 Gold Coast Highway, Palm Beach
Best for: Brunch overlooking Currumbin Creek and time in the parklands.
Dune earns its place for readers who want the setting to be a significant part of brunch. It sits in Palm Beach Parklands overlooking Currumbin Creek, with breakfast, lunch and takeaway options.
That makes it a practical candidate for a morning with family or friends, especially when you want to spend time outside after eating. The café’s homepage offers table bookings and notes that dog-friendly outdoor tables are limited.
Choose Dune for a parkland and creek outing. It is a useful reminder that comparing brunch destinations involves more than the plate: the surroundings and what you can do afterwards help shape the morning too.

16. Paradox Coffee Roasters, Broadbeach
Address: Oracle Dining Precinct, 4 Charles Avenue, Broadbeach
Best for: Specialty coffee and an all-day menu close to your Broadbeach base.
Paradox is a particularly useful addition for anyone staying in Broadbeach. Its current flagship café is in the Oracle Dining Precinct, so use the Broadbeach address when planning a visit.
The café serves its own roasted blends alongside single-origin and limited-release coffees. Its all-day breakfast and lunch offering draws on local providores, making this a place to consider for a meal as well as a coffee stop.
For readers comparing the Gold Coast with Melbourne, the interest is the attention given to coffee alongside a full food menu. I would put Paradox high on the list of additional venues to try.
17. Sonder, Broadbeach
Address: 1/12 Philip Avenue, Broadbeach
Best for: Toby’s Estate coffee, toasties and a relaxed neighbourhood stop.
Sonder gives this guide another option within Broadbeach itself. Experience Gold Coast highlights its Toby’s Estate coffee and a menu with choices such as a truffle cheese toastie and a fruit bagel with ricotta, berries and honey.
This is one to consider when your ideal brunch is a good coffee and something satisfying on bread. It broadens the guide beyond substantial cooked breakfasts and bakery destinations.
The tourism profile also notes the vinyl collection and outdoor seating for visitors with dogs. Check the café’s own social updates for its latest offerings.
Visit Sonder’s official Instagram. Read Experience Gold Coast’s Broadbeach brunch guide.
18. Goya Café, Broadbeach
Address: Shop 9/2669 Gold Coast Highway, Broadbeach
Best for: Japanese-inspired brunch, sandos and omurice.
Goya brings a different style of brunch to the Broadbeach shortlist. Its Japanese-inspired offering includes sandos made with shokupan, the soft Japanese milk bread, and omurice, a rice dish served with an omelette.
Urban List’s Japanese café guide highlights Goya’s minimalist setting and food inspired by Osaka and Tokyo. That makes it an interesting candidate for Melbourne café lovers who enjoy exploring beyond the familiar breakfast menu.
I would include Goya for the variety it adds to the article. Use the café’s social account to check recent dishes before deciding what to order.
Visit Goya Café’s official Instagram. Read Urban List’s Japanese café guide.
19. Blackboard Varsity, Varsity Lakes
Address: 7/240 Varsity Parade, Varsity Lakes
Best for: Specialty coffee and seasonal brunch away from the beach strip.
Blackboard is a strong candidate for readers who judge a café by its coffee and kitchen. Its own description puts specialty coffee, seasonal food and local produce at the centre of the experience.
The Varsity Lakes location expands the guide into another neighbourhood. That is useful during a longer Gold Coast stay, when discovering a café beyond the usual holiday circuit can be part of the attraction.
Its approach to brunch classics with a contemporary touch makes it relevant to the Melbourne comparison. Blackboard advertises walk-in service, so keep your plans flexible if visiting at a busy time.
20. Commune, Burleigh Heads
Address: 1844 Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads
Best for: A neighbourhood café stop while exploring Burleigh.
Commune adds a straightforward neighbourhood café option to the Burleigh group. Its Gold Coast Highway location gives readers another choice alongside the bakery-led appeal of Paddock and Tarte.
The current website publishes a food menu and daily kitchen service. I would shortlist it for a morning when the plan is simply to settle in for coffee and brunch before spending more time around Burleigh.
For this article, the value is variety: a broader café guide should include everyday neighbourhood choices as well as places built around pastries or a distinctive destination setting. Check Commune’s current menu through its website.
21. Palm Springs, Burleigh Heads
Address: 1878 Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads
Best for: Brunch in a Southern California-inspired setting.
Palm Springs brings a different visual character to the Burleigh selection. The café describes its style as Southern Californian, making it an appealing addition for readers who enjoy the setting as much as the food.
Its online ordering menu includes breakfast sliders, giving you one example of the more casual brunch choices available. As with the other venues, check the current menu rather than relying on an older food photograph.
This is a sensible inclusion for a leisurely holiday morning or a catch-up with friends. The café operates on a walk-in basis, so allow some flexibility when arranging a group visit.
22. Bumbles, Budds Beach
Address: 19–21 River Drive, Budds Beach, Surfers Paradise
Best for: Breakfast, cakes and a catch-up near the river.
Bumbles introduces Budds Beach to the guide. The café’s own story describes a series of connecting dining rooms with vintage character, alongside breakfast, lunch, cakes and pastries.
Its River Drive address makes it an option for exploring the riverside side of Surfers Paradise. That gives the article another kind of coastal morning beyond the oceanfront and the main café precincts.
I would suggest Bumbles for readers planning a longer catch-up, particularly if they enjoy a café with individual rooms and a distinctive atmosphere. Its website labels the menus as seasonal examples, so treat published dishes as a guide.
23. Pasture & Co, Currumbin Valley
Address: Ground Currumbin, 2 Village Way, Currumbin Valley
Best for: A leafy valley outing with varied dietary choices.
Pasture & Co is one of the most useful additions for broadening the guide geographically. Located within Ground Currumbin, it gives readers a reason to head into Currumbin Valley for a café visit.
The venue describes an approach centred on fresh, local and sustainably sourced ingredients. It advertises vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free choices, including options among the sweets.
Choose it when you want brunch to be part of an outing into greener surroundings. One practical detail matters if you are travelling with a pet: the precinct is in a conservation area and does not allow dogs.
24. Barefoot Barista, Palm Beach
Address: 15 Palm Beach Avenue, Palm Beach
Best for: A substantial breakfast or lunch in Palm Beach.
Barefoot Barista deserves consideration for its Palm Beach café, which serves breakfast and lunch near the beach. It provides another southern option for readers looking for a full meal.
The current online menu includes crispy potato hash and zucchini and halloumi fritters, alongside familiar choices such as avocado on sourdough. Those examples give a useful sense of the café’s savoury brunch offering.
This listing is specifically for Palm Beach. Barefoot also has a Currumbin venue, so check the address and branch menu when making plans. The Palm Beach location would fit naturally into a morning exploring this part of the coast.
25. Le Vintage Café, Worongary
Address: 1 Kurilpa Street, Worongary
Best for: A neighbourhood brunch inland from the coastal strip.
Le Vintage expands the shortlist into Worongary. Its published café information covers breakfast and lunch, while local guides describe an eclectic setting with outdoor dining and pet-friendly areas.
It is worth including for readers spending longer on the Gold Coast, particularly those who want to explore neighbourhood cafés beyond the beachfront suburbs. The location makes it a separate inland outing from the Broadbeach and Mermaid Beach group.
I would introduce Le Vintage as another café to investigate, with the current menu checked before a visit. It adds geographic variety without suggesting that every worthwhile Gold Coast brunch needs to be beside the ocean.
Visit Le Vintage Café. Read its Must Do Gold Coast café profile.
Where to brunch when you are staying in Broadbeach
Because Broadbeach is my base, I would organise this list into a few manageable outings. There is no need to work through cafés at opposite ends of the coast on the same morning.
- Keep it central: Elk Espresso, No Name Lane and Paradox are useful Broadbeach starting points. Add Sonder for coffee and toasties, Goya for Japanese-inspired brunch, or Alkemist to explore Broadbeach Waters.
- Explore Mermaid Beach: Choose Bam Bam, Sunnyboy, The Milkman’s Daughter or Little Mermaid according to whether the priority is baking, a beachside setting, vegetarian choices or a family meal.
- Head north: Consider Bumbles around Budds Beach or make Main Beach the focus with Hot Shott or The Winey Cow. Daark takes you farther into the neighbourhood café scene at Chirn Park.
- Make a southern outing: Consider Paddock, Tarte, Commune or Palm Springs around Burleigh; Custard Canteen near Tallebudgera Creek; Barefoot Barista or Dune around Palm Beach; or Stable in Tugun.
- Explore inland: Try Blackboard in Varsity Lakes, Le Vintage in Worongary or Pasture & Co in Currumbin Valley. Choose one area and give yourself time to enjoy the outing.
For a glimpse of the coast before you head out, visit our Broadbeach live beach-camera page.
A few practical brunch tips
- Check the kitchen hours. Coffee service can continue after cooked food finishes. A café being open does not necessarily mean its full brunch menu is available.
- Look up the booking policy. Several places in this guide are walk-in only. For a celebration or a larger group, check arrangements before everyone arrives.
- Use current menus for prices. Compare the meal you would actually order, including sides, drinks and any stated surcharges. Bakery coffee stops and full table-service brunches can be quite different purchases.
- Allow time for the location. Check your route and parking options before setting off, particularly when combining brunch with other holiday plans.
- Confirm dietary details with the café. Seasonal menus and substitutions change. For allergies or coeliac requirements, discuss ingredients and food preparation with staff.
Gold Coast brunch FAQs
What are your top three brunch cafés on the Gold Coast?
My top three are Bam Bam Bakehouse in Mermaid Beach, Hot Shott in Main Beach and Sunnyboy Espresso in Mermaid Beach, in that order. They are my personal favourites from spending around three months of the year on the Gold Coast, based in Broadbeach.
Where should I start for brunch in Broadbeach?
Elk Espresso at The Oasis, No Name Lane and Paradox in the Oracle precinct, Sonder on Philip Avenue and Goya on the Gold Coast Highway offer different brunch styles within Broadbeach. Alkemist is in nearby Broadbeach Waters, while Bam Bam, Sunnyboy and Little Mermaid are in Mermaid Beach to the south.
Which Gold Coast cafés are worth considering for pastries?
Bam Bam Bakehouse, Paddock Bakery, Tarte Bakery & Café and Custard Canteen are good places to investigate for a bakery-focused visit. Check each venue’s current selection, as individual pastries and availability can change.
Are there good vegetarian and vegan brunch options?
The Milkman’s Daughter and Stable both publish vegetarian and vegan choices or adaptations. The Milkman’s Daughter’s current menu also includes ham and fish, so it should not be treated as an exclusively vegetarian venue. Confirm the ingredients and substitutions for your order.
Do Gold Coast brunch cafés take bookings?
Policies vary. Hot Shott, Sunnyboy, Elk, Paddock and Tarte’s Burleigh café advertise walk-in service. The Winey Cow Main Beach offers bookings, while Daark advertises advance bookings for qualifying groups. Check the individual venue before making plans.
Which cafés suit brunch with children?
Little Mermaid advertises a gated children’s play area with toys. Dune Café’s Palm Beach Parklands setting also makes it worth considering for a family outing. Ask directly about highchairs, pram space and children’s menu options if these matter to your visit.
